You
We are in our 60’s, fit, healthy and active. Why would we even think about this?
Solution
Congratulations, you’re fortunate. However, it’s not too early to develop an age-in-place plan that provides peace of mind and the luxury of being able to proactively manage the process.
You
We love our home; our kids are out the house, and we are thinking of doing some home renovations.
Solution
There is no better time to prepare for the future. If you are going to renovate, its a great opportunity to incorporate future needs into the plans. For example, if new doorways are involved – make them 36” wide; a new kitchen – install undercounter drawers rather than cupboards, pull handles instead of knobs, and hands-free faucets. These are just a few of many examples of thoughtful proactive design.

There are some elements of our home that we are finding less than ideal, but we are not ready for a stair-lift and grab-bars yet.
Solution
If certain aspects of your home are not working for you, don’t ignore them. It is not too early to develop an age-in-place plan and then make home modifications as needed. What’s important is that you avoid a fall.

My spouse just had a fall in the bathroom. It was a stupid mistake; it’s probably not going to happen again (at least soon).

It may not happen again soon, but another fall is extremely likely. Every year 81% of hospital admissions (65+) are fall related. Horrifically, over one-third of those people are unable to return home, and worse - approximately 50% do not survive the following year. (source: Stats Canada)

We have a large lot; can we construct a second living space on our property?
Solution
It is possible. In 2018 the City of Toronto approved Laneway Housing zoning. Over 30,000 properties meet the qualifications. The City is currently studying recommendations allowing for backyard Garden Suites. Approval is expected in Summer 2021. Laneway or Garden, both have great potential as age-in-place or care-giver homes.

We want to downsize but can’t find anything suitable.
